Small situational changes can lead to much better habits

November 06, 2019 by Jamie Berger

The above is from a recent Jerome Groopman New Yorker piece that addresses humankind’s eternal quest for better behavior as seen through the lens of social psychologist Wendy Wood’s new book, Good Habits, Bad Habits.

The quote above addresses some of the “Executive Function” piece of academic coaching: finding out what situations - say, sitting on one’s bed to do homework and regularly falling asleep - get in the way of doing one’s best work. A change as simple as changing rooms one works in or even making sure to work at the desk not on the bed can make a huge difference! Well worth a read if you or someone you know needs to cover their marshmallows.
